Medical Conditions and Medications Impact on Older Adults’ Driving Safety

Consult with your doctor if certain medications or medical conditions may interfere with your driving safety. 

While not solely based on aging, we can experience changes in our health and mobility that may interfere with maintaining our ability to drive safely. By attending regularly scheduled doctor’s visits and annual check-ups, you have the chance to speak with your doctor to understand how certain medical conditions or medications may impact your daily activities, such as driving.

Safety on Maryland Roads

Crashes are no accident. Last year, more than 500 lives were lost on our roadways and thousands of others were injured. The only acceptable number is zero. MDOT MVA’s Highway Safety Office is working to change behaviors that lead to careless and irresponsible driving. You can help by always buckling up, never driving impaired, and always keeping your eyes on the road.

In 2021, there were 55.8 million people—17 percent of the total U.S. population—who were 65 and older. As more older adults are staying behind the wheel for longer, it is important to bring attention to the intersection of aging and disability and its impact on driving safety. ChORUS can help you understand how potential age-related changes and disabilities affect driving, which is crucial for promoting road safety and supporting older adults in maintaining their independence.

Between the Lines - NCGHSP

Learn about resources and transportation options for older adults with mild cognitive impairments from the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program's latest video, Between the Lines. 

The film highlights the process for assessing older adults' driving capabilities, emphasizing early identification and reporting of at-risk drivers. The ending provides guidance for healthcare providers on addressing driving safety in patients with mild cognitive impairment and directing them to resources and evaluations to ensure their safety and independence. 

Data Visualization - Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)

This portal presents interactive visualizations that focus on several highway safety topics of interest. These visualizations include multiple dashboards with information on fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes and fatalities based on data from NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). FARS contains data on every fatal traffic crash in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Enhancing Rural Road Safety for Older Adults

Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW) is July 15-19 and the theme is, “Life Between the Lines: Reducing Roadway Departures.” 

Organized by the National Center for Rural Road Safety (the Center), RRSAW is a time to focus on rural road safety and highlight resources that help rural road practitioners and stakeholders achieve safety, while raising awareness of the unique road safety challenges rural communities experience.
