There is no place like Home for the Holidays and for some of us that means traveling and, as the song says, the traffic will be terrific. So, be careful out there – leave early, travel when others might not be able to, and stay alert. I’ve scheduled my maintenance for next week to make sure my car is operating at its best so be sure to do that before heading out too – check tire pressure, oil levels, etc. as a precaution against a breakdown during your trip.
As the year comes to an end, this is a great time to take stock of how the year has been and start thinking about resolutions or changes you want to make in the coming year. Part of that is to continue to assess how your driving has been. Are you still comfortable behind the wheel? Do you need to consider CarFit to make sure you are situated properly in your car? If you live in an area that gets hit with winter weather, have you identified alternatives to driving in the ice and snow so that you can get groceries and medications delivered or rideshare with someone if necessary? Recently, have you had more crashes or near misses that might warrant exploring your options in order to remain safe? Turn to ChORUS and our Older Driver Transportation Planning Tool for answers to these questions and more and to get started with planning for the future.
Holidays are also a time when families and friends gather – a perfect time for a conversation about what your transportation plan is and how family members and friends can help you implement your plan. Have the conversation and take the time to work with someone on their plan now so that you are prepared if there is a crisis.
I’m almost ready for my holiday with gifts getting wrapped and decorations around the house. I am looking forward to the time with my family. I hope you also have good times planned and, whatever holiday you celebrate, may this season bring all of us peace, joy, and happiness.
