Since all states have different license renewal laws, members of the community may have questions about their state. Family members/caregivers may have questions about an older driver who doesn’t live in the same state they live in. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety maintains a chart providing a summary of older driver renewal laws by state(link is external) This chart can be useful to inform individuals about laws in various states disseminated to anyone who has questions regarding older driver licensing renewals. The chart can also be used to explore laws in various states when your state is considering changes in laws or policies.

- California TREDS(link is external) – The mission of TREDS is to improve driver safety through education and training programs for professionals and the community and to conduct research to inform and improve public policy. Based at UC San Diego in the School of Medicine and Qualcomm Institute, TREDS operates under the leadership of Linda Hill, MD, MPH, Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health.
- Florida Safe Mobility(link is external) – Safe Mobility for Life will help older drivers learn how to remain independent and find alternative transportation once they decide to retire from driving.
- Iowa Retiring from Driving(link is external) – The time may come when it is simply no longer possible for an older driver to continue to drive safely, for their own sake, and the sake of other people on the road. This website provides information for drivers and those who care for them to explore alternative transportation options and plan for when the individual can no longer drive.
- Maryland Resource Guide for Aging Drivers(link is external) is a report from the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Older Driver Safety Forum containing information to help you drive safely now, identify the risks and warning signs of change, and plan a smooth transition to retiring from driving if and when the time comes.
- Michigan Safe Drivers, Smart Options(link is external) – Driving requires both physical ability and quick reactions. This site includes a set of resources designed to help older drivers stay active and safe behind the wheel.
- Virginia Granddriver(link is external) – Virginia GrandDriver is an educational resource designed to provide Virginians with information and resources about staying safe and mobile on the road as they age. The program gives older Virginians and their families suggestions to improve driving skills and keep everyone on the road safe.
