The Older Adult population (age 65 and up) is continuously increasing as this population is living longer, healthier lives while staying behind the wheel longer as a driver. In fact, based on the latest available data from the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), older drivers made up 22 percent of all licensed drivers in 2022 (51.5 million licensed older drivers).1 Although older adults are more risk averse, there are a set of unique challenges that older drivers may face. As we all age, it is important to understand the physical, visual and cognitive changes that may affect an older adult's driving ability and crash risk that are associated with aging, medication, or even diagnosis.
In support of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week (ODSAW), below are resources to help caregivers, family members, state driver licensing agencies, law enforcement, medical professionals, social and aging service providers, and others engage in addressing safety among older drivers.
